Virtual Exhibition 2
The second interim show we had was more refined as we had to consider a title for the project and an artist statement to refine what our work is about.
The size, scale, sequence and location were considered between our group.
I chose to display my images as a sequence of three as I felt these images were would depict the theme in my work.
I wanted to show women shown in stages of undress, covering the model’s face with papers and fabrics and using bright colours; pink for femininity.
Working project title- “Feminine Physique”.
My title was inspired by the Book “Feminine Mystique” by Betty Friedan.
Artist Statement: “How the camera represents women is a notion that is constantly being challenged. I aim to question how their bodies are represented in society, are objectified by men and how the camera shapes female identity. The hiding of the face makes the anonymity of the subject more intriguing. Showing the body as an object or sculpture portrays how the female form has become culturally dehumanised. Showing this as a performative action and focusing on gestures, this work explores and challenges the objectification of the female body in response to the male gaze and using the frame as a controlling space to play with the idea of looking”.
